Background of the Study
Cultural festivals in Cross River State serve as vibrant occasions for the display of traditional Efik language, where context-specific language use is paramount. During these festivals, speakers utilize unique linguistic expressions, proverbs, and ceremonial phrases tailored to the celebratory and ritualistic environment. These context-specific markers not only enhance the cultural authenticity of the events but also function to reinforce communal values and historical narratives (Nkanu, 2023). The Efik language, rich in metaphor and symbolism, adapts to the festival context through specialized vocabulary and intonation patterns that differ markedly from everyday speech. However, modernization and the influence of global communication trends are beginning to challenge these traditional practices, potentially diluting their cultural significance (Okon, 2024). This study evaluates how context-specific language is maintained during cultural festivals, exploring the balance between tradition and modern influences. Field observations, recordings of festival activities, and interviews with cultural practitioners will be employed to document these practices and assess their role in cultural preservation.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional context-specific language use during Efik cultural festivals is increasingly threatened by modern influences that may dilute its cultural impact (Nkanu, 2023). As global communication styles permeate local festivities, there is a risk that the unique linguistic markers traditionally used to convey communal identity may be altered or lost (Okon, 2024). This erosion could undermine the transmission of cultural values and weaken the effectiveness of festival discourse. Despite the importance of these practices, there is limited research on how modernization affects context-specific language use during cultural events, highlighting the need for systematic evaluation to ensure their preservation.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document context-specific language practices in Efik during cultural festivals.

  • To assess the impact of modernization on these practices.

  • To recommend strategies for preserving traditional language use.

Research Questions

  • What are the key context-specific linguistic features used in Efik festivals?

  • How are these features affected by modern communication trends?

  • What measures can preserve these practices during festivals?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines context-specific language use in Efik during cultural festivals, contributing to the preservation of indigenous cultural heritage. The findings will assist cultural custodians, linguists, and policymakers in developing strategies to safeguard traditional language practices amid modern influences (Nkanu, 2023; Okon, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to language use during cultural festivals in Cross River State and does not cover other communicative contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Context-Specific Language Use: Language tailored to a particular social or ceremonial setting.

  • Efik Language: The indigenous language of the Efik people.
